Growing Rescued: A Sustainable Garden Planter by CedarCraft

Utilizing Scrap Wood for a Greener Future

Our Mill, like any other, was creating tons of odd-length pieces of scrapped cedar wood each year. There had to be better ways to utilize this seemingly scrap wood. Light-bulb moment, join the small pieces together to make beautiful mosaic boards for garden planters. Sustainable in material and sustainable home garden.

During a typical milling process, cedar pieces are cut from longer board stock. These pieces are gathered in bins and typically discarded. CedarCraft, a renowned design brand, has taken a step towards sustainability by rescuing this material and transforming it into something extraordinary. By gluing the little pieces together, they create beautiful usable boards to manufacture their innovative garden planters.

What sets the Growing Rescued garden planter apart is its commitment to eco-friendliness and responsible forestry practices. Unlike traditional planters that require new trees to be harvested, CedarCraft's design utilizes rescued wood, making it a sustainable choice for environmentally-conscious consumers. In addition, the brand only uses sustainably grown SFI/PEFC cedar, ensuring that their products have a minimal impact on the environment.

The realization of the Growing Rescued garden planter is made possible through the use of 100% rescued Western Red Cedar. The design incorporates dovetail cuts, allowing the panels to slide into place without the need for any tools during assembly. This user-friendly feature makes it easy for anyone to set up their own sustainable garden.

The team behind this innovative design includes Doug Tracey, Glen Dobi, Jack Janse, John Halac, Glenn Griffin, Scott Haskins, Ryan Rooke, Lindsey Mellard, Penny VanBaale, and Liza Boccaccio. Their collective effort and creativity have resulted in a product that not only enhances the aesthetics of any garden but also contributes to a greener future.

The Growing Rescued garden planter has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2017, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects, and Green Design category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that showcase creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life. By incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, CedarCraft has created a product that not only beautifies spaces but also makes a positive impact on the world.
